There is a lot of interest at the moment in electric cars with many people claiming that they plan to buy one. I’ve been following the news closely about vehicles like the new Ford Focus electric and while it does sound exciting, I’m still not convinced enough to invest my money in one of these cars. There are a lot of car experts claiming that the electric car is about to revolutionise the way we drive, and that within a few years this will be the most common type of vehicle. I’m not denying that such a future is possible, but I’m just not so sure about how soon it’s going to arrive.
I have no problem getting my head around the benefits of the electric car, and I can also see how far the technology has come in recent years. My feeling is though that this technology still has a long way to go before it can replace traditionally fuelled vehicles. There are just too many drawbacks with the electric car; they fact that you have to charge it after about a hundred miles and that it does not perform as well as a traditional car. When we compare an electric vehicle to a similar product created ten years ago it is hard not to be impressed, but when you compare it with other cars it just doesn’t yet seem in the same league.
I agree that we do need an alternative to our current fossil fuel based vehicles, and this will have to come sooner rather than later. The price of petrol is getting higher each year, and we just can’t depend on it lasting forever. Of course with electric cars this power is often produced by fossil fuels as well, but these huge power generators are also experimenting with other ways to produce energy. I predict that we will eventually find a way to power our vehicles with renewable energy and that will be a great day for drivers and for the environment as well.
I suspect that many of those people who are planning to buy a new electric car won’t go true with it. At the moment this vehicle is still a bit of a gamble and we all know that these vehicles are going to improve in the future. Who wants to be a vehicle that could be out of date within a couple of years?
